Lake Geneva

Wine & Walking

Little is known about Swiss wine in the UK, as very little of it is made for the export market. One of the most famous wine producing areas is however, Lavaux, whose vineyards stretch right down to the shores of Lake Geneva.

For fabulous views of the vineyards, take the wine train from Vevey which takes you right into the heart of wine growing country. Alternatively take the funicular to Mont-Pelerin and then on foot make your way to the very modern "Plein Ciel Tower", which takes you to an altitude of 1100m and looks over the whole area from Lake Geneva to the Rhône Valley to the Alps.

You could also walk part or all of the hiking wine trail from Ouchy in the Olympic capital Lausanne to Chillon in Montreux. The trail from Lausanne to Montreux in 8 hours 30 minutes in all, with many local caves that you can visit for wine tasting. There are also mini trails which vary in walking time of between 25 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes. Both walks are recommended for keen walkers.

Walking& Cycling

Our friends Urs and Marie Anne Zubrigenn at teh Beau-Site hotel is Saas-Feehave once again organized a variety of themed walking weeks throughout the summer. If you prefer to find your own path, or let your spirit guide you, walking and cycling maps are available from all of the local tourist offices, where you will also be able to book half-day or full-day guided excursions led by respected local experts.

Museums

Museums

There are many museums between Montreux and Vevey, including a small but excellent photography museum and a food museum in Vevey. Lausanne also has a large number of museums including the Olympic museum.

Aigle
Visit Aigle's château and wine museum and enjoy its many traditional restaurants and wine tasting opportunities or take one of the mountain railways up to the alpine villages.

Blonay to Chamby
On Saturdays and Sundays you can take the steam train from Blonay to Chamby and visit the steam train museum.
The area around the northern shore of Lake Geneva is known as the "Swiss Riviera," and is truly beautiful part of Switzerland. The gentle rolling hills which rise from the waters of the lake are covered with neat terraced vineyards and dotted picturesque little villages. From the higher vantage points, you can see the distant peaks of the Bernese Alps, and the dramatic views of the French Alps dominated by Mont Blanc, across the lake. The Lake Geneva Region has one of the sunniest and mildest climates in Switzerland, as it is sheltered by Rochers de Naye which stretches up behind Montreux "The Pearl of the Swiss Riviera" to a height of 2045m. Lake steamers and boats provide transport around the lake and the opportunity to travel in style and enjoy the superb scenery in a relaxed atmosphere. Please note: the service is significantly reduced up until the beginning of JUne and after mid September.
