Out and About

Start at the Cathedral or at the 15th century Chateau with its Italian-styled roof and work down the hill taking in the great views over Lausanne towards Lake Geneva. There are also many fine country houses and estates, the most important being the Mon Repos estate which was completely renovated in 1813.

The Chateau of Aigle, makes for an interesting day out with its wine museum, all set in a charming village atmosphere, whilst Montreux, with its Chateau de Chillon is an east train ride away.

There are a mixture of museums covering topics such as archaeology, history, the Olympics, geology and fine art. Lake steamers will transport you to the French towns of Evian and Thonon, alternatively you can visit wither the old town or Ouchy which is linked by local bus. There is also a good bus service linking all the main areas of interest. Public transport is free of charge in selected zones for guests staying overnight for the duration of your stay in Lausanne.

What's On

Shopping
The main shopping area is in the old pedestrianised town and towards the station. There is also a traditional market held in the old town every Wednesday and Saturday morning.

Wine and Dine
Relax and enjoy the mile of lakeside pavement cafes, restaurants and bars in Ouchy.

Biking
Free bike hire is available in Vevey from 7.30am-9.30pm during May to October. There is a CHF20 deposit required.
Overlooking Lake Geneva, and facing the Alps, Lausanne enjoys a superb position flanked by vineyards. From the Romans to Romantic poets, Lausanne offers an interesting melange of old and new, from the old town set up on the hill above, to the newer more lively lakeside area known as Ouchy.

Vevey is an elegant resort nestling in the foothills on the shores of Lake Geneva. Linked with neighbouring Montreux by a regular trolley bus service, its medieval old town is a fascinating maze of narrow, cobbled streets and picturesque squares. There are two weekly open air markets as well as cafes and restaurants, and from mid July until the end of August there is a folklore market with wine tasting and traditional music.
